Social justice would make it possible for every individual to have the basic necessities in life,
which include food, shelter, clothing, education, and healthcare. This is not the case in our society
(yet) thus many people struggle on a daily basis.
St. Mark’s and the Social Ministry Committee remain committed to helping those in need. Various
groups and parishioners represent hope to those who enter the doors of St. Joseph’s House.
Approximately 120 people are served a hot meal; however, just as important is that they see a
caring community of people who treat them with compassion, respect and dignity. An act of
kindness represents God’s hope which is often all they have.
Please consider spending a few hours on a Saturday to serve at St. Joseph’s House. You will find
you will receive as much or more than you give. Please call today to volunteer.

The presence of the poor/oppressed is not to be considered a fact of life that we should accept as
unavoidable but rather to be considered a scandal. It contradicts God’s vision of the human
community and therefore must be counteracted (Hugen, 1998).

Social Ministry News...
If you missed the opportunity to serve at St. Joseph's House, don't despair as there
is still time! Jerry Hassett and a group of parishioners are scheduled for June 14th.
In a perfect world all people would have what they need to survive. However, it is not
a perfect world so we must do what we can to make it a better place for those who
suffer on a daily basis. They struggle to acquire the basic necessities of life that
many take for granted.
St. Mark's and the Social Ministry Committee are dedicated to helping those in need.
All who enter the doors at St. Joseph's House (approximately 120 people) are
served a hot meal. Just as important is that they are treated with compassion,
dignity and respect by the caring community at St. Mark's.
Poverty has a face- it is a son, daughter, brother, sister, mother or father in need of
your help. Please call Jerry today at 225-5510 to volunteer.
