Prayer Shawl Ministry

"You formed my inmost being, you knit me in my mother's womb. I praise you, so wonderfully you made me; wonderful are your works!" Psalm 139:13-14.

St. Mark's Prayer Shawl Ministry was started in 2005. We gather together monthly in a spirit of friendship and love to knit and crochet shawls to be given to people who could use a spiritual "hug". We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month in the library room, from 1:00 -3:00 pm.

The meeting is opened with a prayer.  We take time to reflect on our purpose: to create a gift as a sign of hope and comfort to the recipient that God is present and will always be with him/her during difficult times such as after surgery, illness, or the loss of a loved one. We also make white blankets/shawls that are given to newly baptized persons when they are welcomed into the church.

After each shawl is completed we wash it, have it blessed by a deacon or the pastor, and then it is available for anyone who would like to have it. We enclose a prayer with the shawl when it is delivered. Sometimes we receive thank you notes from recipients, which we keep in a special binder. At times we've been given donations of yarn, money and shawls from grateful people who want to show their appreciation for what we have done for them.

Participation in this ministry is open to anyone who knits, crochets, quilts, or does any other kind of needlework.
